There is no such thing as an overqualified candidate

Let me say that one more time. There is no such thing as an overqualified candidate.

In recruiting, your goal should always be to hire the best candidate possible that fits the needs of the company. Someone is either qualified for a role or they are not qualified for the role.

When someone is determined to be over-qualified, what is actually being said is one or a combination of negative assumptions.
❌ “They are going to be bored with the role and leave”
❌ “They are set in their ways (aka too old) and can’t adapt to our culture”
❌ “They are using this interview as a bargaining point to just go somewhere else”
❌ “They are going to be too expensive”
❌ “They are going to be too good and could take my job” (Yes hiring managers definitely think this)

If you just skip the assumptions and ask direct questions you will find out very interesting things like:
✅ “I really want to be part of this company/mission, so I am open to taking a step back and proving my worth” (I know, I have personally done this and it worked out extremely well)
✅ “I have had a change in my life circumstances and this role better fits my needs”
✅ “While I have great prior experience, this industry is new to me, so I’m excited about a chance to learn”

You are only hurting yourself by passing on top talent because you assume negative things. Be grateful that highly qualified people are considering joining your company. Ask direct questions rather than making assumptions and eliminating people without a conversation. Play things right and you may end up with the next superstar on your team. This person may eventually take your job but only because they helped propel you to the next level.
