Breadth vs Depth

When hiring for startup leadership which is more important, breadth of experience or specialized experience?

To me, when it comes to startups, the answer is simple. The breadth of experience is much more valuable.

Why is this?

Adaptability

The only constant in the startup world is change. A leader who has shown an ability to be successful across a wide range of products and/or industries is much more likely to be successful in adapting to the company’s evolving needs. I will always bet on the well-rounded candidate over the long-tenured one. It is much easier to teach the well-rounded candidate the idiosyncrasies of a new industry than to teach the long-tenured candidate how to adapt to change.
